Specialised & Large Scale

Scheltema has developed capabilities beyond its core of roofing, ceilings and partitioning which serve to further enhance its positioning within the marketplace. These include projects aligned to national infrastructure roll-out, projects implemented nationally and beyond South Africa’s borders, and long term projects that require significant project management capability. In addition, the company has earned a strong reputation in the fields of timber frame construction, asbestos removal, specialist roof construction, heritage projects and turnkey office refurbishments.

Timber Frame Construction

In 2011, Justin Cooke of Architecture Co-op encouraged Scheltema to expand its horizons into Timber Frame construction. Scheltema accomplished this, and with distinction, at Rochepan on the West Coast near Velddrift for Cape Nature.

The company renovated multiple existing cabins and built a number of new timber frame structures to complete the project. Apart from the impressive carpentry roll-out, features of interest include: footings designed to ‘’touch the earth lightly’’, fully insulated and lightweight internal and external walls, dry loos, water harvesting and solar water heating. The project is considered a great success by Cape Nature, Provincial Government and all related stakeholders. The company is well positioned for these kinds of projects in the future.

Asbestos Removal and Re-Roofing

Scheltema is a certified asbestos remover. Trained labour, project management capability and logistics capability combine to position the company to take on a wide variety of asbestos and re-roofing projects.

Scheltema has recently been involved in upgrade and refurbishment projects at Uitsig, Scottsdene and Hanover Park for the City of Cape Town where the company replaced asbestos roofs with fibre cement roof covering, and installed new ceilings.

Industrial revamps typically include stripping asbestos sheets, refurbishing and repainting structural steelwork, supply and fitment of environmentally friendly insulation and the fitting of new roof covering. Scheltema is currently involved in a number of such projects for a diverse group of large property owners. The company has recently completed ‘’Bravo’’, a mattress factory in Epping Industria2 for Metropolitan life and a production facility for MBSA (Mercedes) in East London.

Eco – Construction /Specialist Roof Construction

Scheltema is committed to going the extra mile to fulfill their client’s dreams of an eco-friendly build – be it for office space, industrial premises, residential home or holiday residence. The company openly embraces the challenge of researching, sourcing, and promoting the use of green products and methods which improve the insulation and protection of buildings. This helps to assist the company’s clients to reduce their overall carbon footprints.

A skilled and stable workforce has always been one of the cornerstones of Scheltema’s success. And since eco-roofing has seen a revival of age old skills and techniques, it is Scheltema’s access to highly trained carpenters, joiners, and master-craftsmen – many trained under apprenticeships both locally and abroad – that enables them to competently manage these low-tech but challenging projects.

Recent examples of interest using natural timber beams, trusses, and rafters include Spier Wine Estate and Imizamo Yethu Primary School in Hout Bay. At Spier the application included the use of exposed poplar beams and timber ceilings, while at Imizamo Yethu Primary the roof was built using pine timber beams felled from trees on the site.

Heritage Work

Most iconic heritage buildings within Cape Town are covered with clay tiles, which typically have a life expectancy of +/- 60 years, necessitating their replacement with either the same tiles or those of a similar specification, in accordance with heritage council guidance and approval. Heritage projects generally involve the sensitive removal of existing clay tiles and replacement with new tiles in accordance with the methodology used at the time of the original installation. These types of installations require skilled workmanship, and since Scheltema has a significant track record in this respect, the company has been entrusted with major replacements at the Groote Schuur Hospital precinct and UCT Upper Campus, both of which remained fully operational for the duration of the projects.

Turnkey Office Refurbishments

Scheltema is also able to offer clients turnkey refurbishments to office space, or to any other internal facility that requires upgrading. The company has both the skill and capacity to engage with and manage all affiliated trades, and run with the design, planning, and approvals processes, should this be required by respective clients. These “one-stop shop” installations typically include dry-wall partitioning and ceiling reconfigurations and installations, electrical, air conditioning, floor finishes, computer flooring, data cabling and painting. The following gives an idea of typical steps that are involved:

  • Agreement on the level of refurbishment/re-design with the Client or Client’s professional team.
  • Appointment of a design coordinator/architect/engineer if required.
  • The production of a quote encompassing all trades involved.
  • The management and overall control of specialist subcontractors ranging from “wet trades” to data cabling.
