Scheltema has developed capabilities beyond its core of roofing, ceilings and partitioning which serve to further enhance its positioning within the marketplace. These include projects aligned to national infrastructure roll-out, projects implemented nationally and beyond South Africa’s borders, and long term projects that require significant project management capability. In addition, the company has earned a strong reputation in the fields of timber frame construction, asbestos removal, specialist roof construction, heritage projects and turnkey office refurbishments.
Scheltema is committed to going the extra mile to fulfill their client’s dreams of an eco-friendly build – be it for office space, industrial premises, residential home or holiday residence. The company openly embraces the challenge of researching, sourcing, and promoting the use of green products and methods which improve the insulation and protection of buildings. This helps to assist the company’s clients to reduce their overall carbon footprints.
A skilled and stable workforce has always been one of the cornerstones of Scheltema’s success. And since eco-roofing has seen a revival of age old skills and techniques, it is Scheltema’s access to highly trained carpenters, joiners, and master-craftsmen – many trained under apprenticeships both locally and abroad – that enables them to competently manage these low-tech but challenging projects.
Recent examples of interest using natural timber beams, trusses, and rafters include Spier Wine Estate and Imizamo Yethu Primary School in Hout Bay. At Spier the application included the use of exposed poplar beams and timber ceilings, while at Imizamo Yethu Primary the roof was built using pine timber beams felled from trees on the site.
