Scheltema started out in 1931 as a modest trading company importing Dutch clay roofing tiles from premises in Strand Street, and have been specializing in roofing, ceiling and partitioning applications ever since. The company has become the undisputed market leader in its field, making significant contributions to a great number of noteworthy projects, both regionally and nationally.
As leaders in the roofing industry for over 80 years, Scheltema now plans to lead the charge in driving environmental sustainability through the development and enhancement of their eco-capabilities. Opportunity for Scheltema lies in the following areas: in Industrial Building revamps – primarily asbestos removal and re-roofing, in Residential Building through the use of low impact and lightweight timber construction and in Commercial Building Refits through managing the re-positioning of primarily partitioning, ceilings, electrics, flooring and computer flooring for their clients.
Industrial Building – Refurbishments/ Re-roofing
While a core part of Scheltema’s business is large scale industrial roofing, the company is increasing its ability to also take on more specialized and eco-friendly roofing projects.
Scheltema is a certified asbestos remover. Industrial revamps typically include stripping asbestos sheets, refurbishing and repainting structural steelwork, supply and fit of environmentally friendly insulation and finally the fitting of new roof covering. Scheltema are currently involved in a number of such projects for a diverse group of property owning clients. The company has recently completed ‘’Bravo’’, a mattress factory in Epping Industria2 for Metropolitan life for example.
Residential Building – Refurbishments/ Timber Frame Construction
Similarly Scheltema is involved in upgrade and refurbishment projects at UItsig, Scottsdene and Hanover park for the city of Cape Town where the company is replacing asbestos roofs with fibre cement roof covering, and installing new ceilings.
Another interesting example is Rocherpan on the West Coast near Velddrift for Cape- Nature where Scheltema is building multi- ple Eco-Cabins by means of Timber Frame construction. Apart from the impressive carpentry roll-out, features of interest include: footings designed to ‘’touch the earth lightly’’, fully insulated and lightweight internal and external walls, ‘’dry loos’’, water harvesting and hot water solar.
Commercial Building Refurbishments/Refits
Not only is Scheltema committed to utilizing environmentally sound products and resuscitating age old techniques, but they also subscribe to the preference for recycling over recreating. “We do a lot of new builds, but we are also perfectly poised to undertake major refurbishments to office space or any other internal facility that requires upgrading,” says company MD, Michael van Breda.
“We are able to provide turnkey solutions to clients who want to refurbish their office environments. Scheltema can manage all aspects to a refit, that is partitioning and ceiling reconfigurations and installations, electrical, flooring, computer flooring and painting. We can offer a one stop shop to our clients,’’ says van Breda.
In addition to commercial office refurbishments, Scheltema has been involved in major revamps and extensions for retail clients such as Pick ‘n Pay, Shoprite, Woolworths and Checkers, where work has been completed without any disruption to trading whatsoever.
Specialized Roof and Ceiling construction
A skilled and stable workforce has always been one of the cornerstones of Scheltema’s success. And since eco-roofing has seen a revival of age old skills and techniques, it is Scheltema’s access to highly trained carpenters, joiners, and master-craftstmen – many trained under apprenticeships both locally and abroad – that enables them to competently manage low-tech but challenging projects
Recent examples of interest using natural timber beams, trusses, and rafters would include Spier Wine Estate and Imizamo Yethu Primary School in Hout Bay. At Spier the application included the use of exposed poplar beams and timber ceilings.
At Imizamo Yethu Primary the roof was built using pine timber beams felled from trees on the site.
Insulating Buildings
Being in the business of insulating buildings, Scheltema is intimately involved in advising clients and architects about best fit insulation solutions for their building. “We are ideally placed to install insulation solutions to those looking to create comfortable buildings to live and work from and looking to save on their electricity bills,” says van Breda.
Scheltema is both committed to going the extra mile to fulfill their client’s dreams of an eco-friendly build – be it for office space, their industrial premises, their home or holiday residence. The company openly embraces the challenge of researching, sourcing, and promoting the use of green products and methods that heat, cool, insulate and illuminate, thus assisting their clients to reduce their carbon footprints.
Scheltema is fully compliant with respect to all Health and Safety legislation and is a LEVEL 4 BBBEE accredited company.
